GREENSBORO, N.C. – The VCU Men's & Women's Cross Country teams claimed both championships on a muddy course at the 2011 Greensboro Cross Country Invitational.

"All the student-athletes raced with Ram toughness and determination on a course with unfavorable conditions," said Director of Cross Country Nicole Cook. "I was very pleased by with their efforts today and we are looking forward to next weekend's competition at the Paul Short Invitational."

The VCU men won the event after posting 34 points, a full 20 points ahead of the next closest competitor. Junior Brenden Leavitt was the top finisher for the Rams, coming in second place with a time of 27:09.51. Seniors John Vial (third place) and Tyler Simmons (eighth place) were the next two members of the Black & Gold to cross the finish line, finishing in 27:28.00 and 28:31.35, respectively.

VCU sophomore Hailey Scheren was the first female runner to cross the finish line, finishing the race in 20:08.92. Seniors Nicole Walters (seventh place) and Heather Dela Cruz (eighth place) followed shortly behind for the Rams in 20:40.11 and 20:50.28.

The Rams are scheduled to compete at the Paul Short Invitational next Friday in Bethlehem, Pa.
