SPLIT, Croatia – Martina Samadan (Split, Croatia) (pictured, right) is an important piece of VCU's 2012 recruiting class and has recently been showing why. The incoming freshman is enjoying a dominant summer on the sand volleyball courts.

A 6-foot-4 middle blocker, Samadan teamed with partner Jea Turic to capture the gold medal at the Croatian Junior National Sand Volleyball Championships June 8-9 in her hometown of Split.
Although she and Juric had just a week to practice together prior to nationals, they plowed through the field, winning seven matches in straight sets.
Samadan is part of a five-player recruiting class set to join the Rams in 2012 and is expected to have an immediate impact.
"She's an impressive athlete," VCU Coach James Finley says of Samadan. "For being a tall kid, she's a really good all-around volleyball player. She's a very powerful offensive player and a great defensive player."
Samadan is expected to join the Rams, 17-17 last season, for preseason camp in early August.
