RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Men's Soccer defender Ryo Shimazaki (Kawasaki, Japan) was selected by Columbus Crew SC as the 59th overall pick, the 7th pick in the third round, in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft Monday afternoon.
Shimazaki joins Said Haji (San Jose Earthquakes, 2019), Rafael Andrade Santos (D.C. United, 2018), Dakota Barnathan (FC Dallas, 2017), Dennis Castillo (Colorado Rapids, 2016) and Kharlton Belmar (Portlant Timbers, 2015), making it five years in a row that VCU has had a selection on draft day.
The Kawasaki, Japan native had a stellar career for VCU from 2016-2019. He was a staple defender for the Black and Gold, making 69 appearances throughout his career, scoring seven goals and dishing out six assists for 20 points. His versatile defending earned him VaSID All-State honors and All-Atlantic 10 honors twice, including a first-team nod this season. Most notably, he recently earned United Soccer Coaches All-Region honors.
During his four-year career, the senior helped guide VCU to the 2019 A-10 Regular Season Title along with making it to the 2016 and 2017 A-10 Tournament Championship Matches. Shimazaki was also an important piece to the 2017 VCU squad that was selected as the #16 overall seed in the 2017 NCAA College Cup.
