VCU CLAMPS DOWN FORDHAM OPENS A-10 PLAY WITH A WIN

The short story: VCU held Fordham to 32 percent (8-of-25) shooting from the field in the second half and forced 18 turnovers in the game in a wire-to-wire victory to open Atlantic 10 Conference play Thursday.

OPENING TIP

  • Senior forward Mike'L Simms led the way for the Black and Gold, producing a season-high 14 points and a career-high eight rebounds. He was 6-of-13 from the floor
  • Junior forward Marcus Santos-Silva added 11 points VCU and produced his eight double-digit scoring game on the year. He also contributed seven rebounds
  • VCU freshman guard Bones Hyland turned in another efficient scoring night, connecting for nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc  
  • Fordham forward Onyi Eyisi had a team-high 13 points for Fordham

THE DIFFERENCE

  • Senior guard De'Riante Jenkins and Simms drained back-to-back threes within the first 60 seconds of the second half to push a VCU 10-point halftime lead to 41-25. Fordham never seriously threatened again
  • VCU moved ahead by 21 a short time later when Hyland buried a trey following a steal by sophomore forward Vince Williams
  • VCU shot 42 percent (23-of-54) from the field. The Rams' smothering defense held Fordham to a mere 32 percent (8-of-25) in the second half and 39 percent (17-of-43) overall
  • VCU outscored Fordham 22-5 off turnovers

NOTABLE

  • Senior guard Marcus Evans handed out six assists and turned it over just once
  • VCU has turned the ball over just nine times in each of its past two games
  • VCU has won 21 consecutive home games dating back to last season
  • VCU's bench contributed 23 points while Fordham's reserves provided just nine
  • VCU leads the all-time series with Fordham 10-1 and the Black and Gold is 10-0 at home this season
