RAMS UNABLE TO ERASE EARLY DEFICIT AT WICHITA STATE

Score: Wichita State 73, VCU 63
Location: Wichita, Kan. (Koch Arena)
Records: VCU 9-3, Wichita State 10-1

The short story: Senior guard Marcus Evans scored a team-high 15 points and helped VCU mount a second-half comeback attempt, but it wasn't enough to overcome Wichita State Saturday inside a frenzied Charles Koch Arena.

OPENING TIP

  • Evans finished connected on 10-of-12 free throws in a physical game. He also grabbed five steals
  • Senior wing Issac Vann added 11 points for the Rams, while Marcus Santos-Silva overcame early foul trouble to provided seven points and seven rebounds in the second half
  • Freshman guard Bones Hyland matched a season-high by logging 23 minutes for VCU and finished with nine points and three rebounds
  • Center Jamie Echenique controlled the paint for Wichita State and finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Grant Sherfield also supplied 14 points for the Shockers

THE DIFFERENCE

  • Echenique scored eight points in the first 3:03 of the contest as the Shockers opened the game on an 18-6 run. VCU never led in the game
  • The Shockers forced 18 turnovers and corralled 16 offensive rebounds. Wichita State owned a 42-37 overall rebounding edge
  • VCU shot 4-of-19 from 3-point range, including 1-of-9 in the second half
  • The Rams mounted multiple comebacks in the game, but were never able to get over the hump. Back-to-back buckets by junior forward Corey Douglas and Hyland trimmed the Shockers' lead to 29-23 with 7:27 left in the first half, but Wichita State responded with a 9-4 burst, punctuated by a 3-pointer from Jamarius Burton
  • The Shockers led by as many as 18 in the second half, but VCU chipped away and used an 8-2 fueled by six free throws to pull within 69-60 with 2:17 on the clock. But the Rams could get no closer

NOTABLE

  • Senior guard De'Riante Jenkins became the 39th member of VCU's 1,000-point club when he buried a 3-pointer from the right wing with 5:40 remaining. He finished with eight points in the contest and was 2-of-4 from beyond the arc
  • VCU converted 19-of-26 free throws, while Wichita State connected on 18-of-31 in a physical contest
