The short story: VCU kicked off its fall golf season with a bang. Sophomore Ian Peng led a record-breaking performance as the Rams surged past Dayton in the final round to capture the season-opening Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational Tuesday.

FIRST TEE

  • Multiple Rams posted career-best scores as VCU combined to shoot 821 at the 54-hole event. That shattered the 10-year old program record low score by 15 strokes. Additionally, VCU finished 31-under to set a new school scoring mark, relative to par, by three strokes
  • Peng led for much of Tuesday's final round and finished tied for second at 10-under, one stroke back of Dayton's Kyle Schmidt. Peng opened with a career-best 65 on Monday and finished with 203 strokes, which ranks fourth-best in program history. Peng carded a 3-under 68 Tuesday
  • Not to be outdone, junior Kristian Tannum Donaldson (68-65-71=204) and sophomore Adrian Vagberg (70-68-67=205) placed fourth and sixth, respectively. Both turned in career-best 54-hole scores
  • Rounding out VCU's top four was sophomore Clifford Foster, who earned his first career top-15 finish. He shot 70-69-70

INSIDE THE SCORECARD

  • VCU (273-272-276) was locked in from the start. The Rams recorded three of the 10 lowest round scores in school history in the tournament
  • Peng and Tannum Donaldson each fired first-round 65s on Monday, which tied the third-lowest single-round score in school history
  • Vagberg recorded three eagles in the tournament
  • Tannum Donaldson's 16 birdies were tied for second-most in the field
  • Peng was 7-under on par 5 holes, second-best in the field
