The Short Story: It would be the tale of two tapes for the VCU Rams on Saturday afternoon, as they would grab a split in their doubleheader with the George Washington Colonials. The Rams would drop Game 1 by a final score of 4-2, while a gem by Brooks Vial would send VCU home with an 11-0 win in Game 2.

  • Mitchel Lacey finished with a six hit day, finishing Game 1 with a 3-for-4 effort with a run scored, and going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in Game 2.
  • Brett Willett added the only other multi-hit game, going 2-for-3, while J.P. Vail launched his first home run of the season, a solo shot in Game 1.
  • Darian Carpenter had a total bases breakout in Game 2, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, two runs scored, and two RBI.
  • Brooks Vial tossed a strong seven shutout innings, giving up only three hits and two walks while striking out five.
  • Zac Ching finished with three RBI after a 2-for-3 day with a double and run scored.
  • Both Logan Farrar and Alex Gransback finished with a pair of hits in Game 2 as well.

Game 1

  • The Rams got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning, as Ching laid down a bunt up the third base line with two out. He beat the throw to first, and Lacey scored on the play giving the Rams a 1-0 lead.
  • George Washington would put up a three-run top of the third as an answer, taking a 3-1 lead.
  • Zeros were abound until the bottom of the eighth inning, as Vail smacked his first home run as a Ram. It would be a solo home run, bringing the Rams within one, putting the score at 3-2.
  • However, the Colonials would fight back with one in the top of the ninth and take the 4-2 win in the opening game.

Game 2

  • The Black & Gold wasted no time getting things going in the bottom of the first inning, as Farrar and Gransback each singled to open up the frame. It would be a single by Carpenter to score the first run, putting the Rams up 1-0.
  • Ching would add to the inning, as he was able to come up to the plate with the bases loaded. He delivered with a bases clearing double into left center, scoring all three runners for a 4-0 lead after one.
  • Thanks to a hot bat from Lacey, the Rams would tack on four more runs in the bottom of the third. The inning would be highlighted by a double from Dylan Isquirdo to give VCU an 8-0 lead.
  • Things would stay quiet until the seventh inning, when the Rams would strike for three more runs. Brody Cook topped off the inning with an RBI single, giving the Rams an 11-0 lead.
  • The Colonials would snag two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but would get the door shut on them in the ninth by Garrett Pearson, sending the Rams home with the win.

VCU will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 2 as they will square off against George Washington in the rubber match of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
