RICHMOND, Va.—VCU Head Baseball Coach Paul Keyes announced today the schedule for the 2012 baseball campaign. The regular season runs from February 17 until May 19, followed by the 2012 CAA Tournament, which will be played at James Madison University's Veterans Memorial Park (May 26-29).

"I think overall it's a favorable schedule that really plays well to the strengths of this team," said VCU Head Coach Paul Keyes. "The ultimate goal in 2012 is to be playing long into the month of June."

The first-pitch of the upcoming season will be thrown on the west coast, as the squad starts the season in sunny southern California. The Rams will face off with Big West Conference member Long Beach State for a three-game weekend series before making the hour trip north to face off with the West Coast Conference's Pepperdine University.

"We play a very tough Long Beach State program to start off the season, which is rich in tradition," Keyes (pictured right) acknowledged.  "When you add the two game series with Pepperdine, it makes for a challenging start to the season against two really fine programs."

VCU will return to The Diamond to face Binghamton in their home opener on February 24.  This will begin a 11-game home stand over 16 days, the longest home stand of Rams' season.  The month of March will feature the most games of any month this season, as the squad will play 18 games over 31 days, and the beginning of conference play.  On the schedule are trips to conference-foes Hofstra and Northeastern, both schools known for the colder weather they experience during the early spring months.

The Black & Gold will play a fairly balanced CAA schedule from March to May. They do not go on the road for more than five games at a time before returning to the home field. The regular season concludes at home May 19 against East Carolina. The Rams will then hit I-64 en-route to James Madison University for the CAA Tournament.
