The Short Story: Kayla Smith led a host of Rams who placed in the top-10 of the 400 at the Virginia Challenge meet, while Samantha Yankson won the hammer throw in Newport News.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Virginia Challenge

  • Three Rams placed placed top 10 in the 400 Invitational. It was sophomore Kayla Smith leading the way with her 54.91 time and third place overall finish. Candice James came in four spots later with a 55.66 time, and Taylor Watkins after that with a 55.81.
  • Senior triple jumper Taylor McCormick had a strong showing, earning fifth place overall with her 12.13m mark. Placing just behind McCormick in sixth was Aliyah Newman. The freshman recorded a 12.10m mark.
  • In the women's discus, Makayla McGowan placed sixth with 48.22m mark and a new personal best.
  • Ashley Brown grabbed a new best in the 800 meter with a 2:13.20.

CNU Captain Classic

  • Yankson won the hammer throw for the second time this season. Yankson earned a mark of 47.01. Senior Latasha hit the 42.33m mark, earning third.
  • In the women's javelin, sophomore Lauryn Reese placed third with a personal best 30.56m.
